Omega: Timekeeper of the Greatest Athletes on Earth

Posted by Chris on Friday, July 30, 2021

For 89 years now, Omega has been the official timekeeper of the Olympics.

It makes sense when you think about it. The Olympic games are a contest between the greatest athletes on the planet, each competing to bring glory to their nation through a series of trials and contests that push these athletes to the absolute limits of their capabilities.

Likewise, Omega watches are widely recognized as among the greatest luxury timepieces on the planet. Functional and elegant with ingeniously crafted movements and the highest quality builds, we’d put Omega would get a medal from us for just about every category.

The most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, is even a spokesperson for the luxury watchmaker. He can often be spotted wearing his favorite Omega pieces, including a Planet Ocean Chronograph and his coveted Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Black.

In a 2016 interview with an Omega rep, Phelps said “I’ve had the privilege to work with some amazing companies in my life, [but] working with Omega I can honestly say is the best. We’ve spent the longest time together and they feel like a family to me.”

That’s one talented family.

Omega watches for women made an appearance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well, sported by track stars Léa Sprunger and Dalilah Muhammad, as well as high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchukikh throughout the games.

To celebrate the greatest sporting event on Earth, we thought we’d show off some of our favorite Omega pieces that are ready for some Olympic action.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Chronograph

This is the same piece that can be frequently seen on Michael Phelps’ wrist when he’s giving an interview and trying to subtly angle it to show off his watch to the camera.

Not that it takes much angling. This masterpiece is breathtaking from all sides. Large arrowed hands decorate the black dial and throw out any pretense of subtlety. The stainless steel build is large and sturdy, and wields a commanding presence. The chronograph controls are fully functional and ready to be tested.

The Planet Ocean boasts a 600m water resistance and is powered by the Omega Caliber 9900 movement with 60 hours of power reserve.

It may look like it’s black, orange, and silver, but this luxury beauty is the gold medal for sure.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial Chronograph “Dark Side of the Moon Sedna Black”

Another favorite of Michael Phelps, this Dark Side of the Moon edition Speedmaster is a sleek dark grey with black straps for when you want to go stealth mode. Yeah, right, like anybody could walk into a room wearing this luxury jaw-dropper without immediately catching everyone’s attention.

The case is built from ceramic, adding to the way that the matte material seems to absorb the light around it. This isn’t a watch that relies on its looks, though. Chronograph controls and two functional second and minute subdials mean you can accurately call a race of any sort, whether it’s from the side of a track or in the Sea of Tranquility.

The Seamaster Diver 300m Co-Axial Master Chronometer Grey Dial

The Seamaster series is the staple for Omega sports timekeeping, featuring relatively affordable prices that still get you that top-shelf luxury the brand is famous for.

This Grey Dial model is our favorite, at least at the moment. We just can’t get over how good the signature waves on the dial look in blue against a grey-hued backdrop. The skeletal minute and hour hands are interesting and do a great job of drawing the eye, and the date window fits in nicely while also being easy to read.

The controls are kept simple but functional, and it doesn’t get much better than the Omega Caliber 8800 workhorse engine that’s powering the piece.

You can get this Seamaster Master Chronometer Grey Dial right now for 20% off.

If you like the Omega Seamaster watch, but the Grey Dial isn’t exactly your aesthetic, we have a lot more for you to check out!

This Blue Dial Sedna Gold model, for instance, is one that we have had actual dreams about.

While we can’t promise that having a beautiful, luxurious Omega strapped to your wrist will make you an Olympian, it’s no stretch to say that you’ll certainly feel like one.
